SciFi Ideas provides interesting ideas & inspiration for science fiction writers.. But as Sterling laid out cyberpunk’s central concerns in the introduction to Mirrorshades, he was, in fact, describing a different direction for modern science fiction: Certain central themes spring up repeatedly in cyberpunk. Or maybe you can sell into the mainstream market—although, if you have a track record as an SF writer, the mainstreamers will be loath to consider you.

Marianne Trench and Peter von Brandenburg's provocative and enlightening "Cyberpunk" (Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Nuart) pays homage to Vancouver-based science-fiction writer William Gibson whose novels, the filmmakers persuasively demonstrate, have had a profound effect on the way science and technology are shaping the future. And like true old punks, the values – and fears – of their formative years have carried through.

Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers and Joe Haldeman's The Forever War are classic examples. Computer systems and networks hardly feature, the impact of technology and ubiquitous information on society is not really a major theme, and none of the main characters are the hackers and information-underbelly characters who populate cyberpunk. Cyberpunk V3.0 (2006 RTG) designed by Michael Pondsmith is set in the 2030s, in a world dominated by splinter cultures surviving in the ruins of the old order.

Douglas Kellner explains the origins of the name: “The term ‘cyber’ is a Greek root signifying control, and the term has been absorbed into the concept of ‘cybernetics,’ signifying a system of high-tech control systems, combining computers, new technologies and artificial realities, with strategies of systems maintenance and control.” [1] “Cyber” can also be connected to the concept of the cyborg. Notable First Novels of 1997 Selection, Locus “With a feel for the genuinely alien, he is a writer to watch.” “Cyberpunk with a literal twist, and an awareness of the interplay of class, race, and status that gives a new edge to the action.

When you package current events in aliens and other planets, the ideas become easier to process and understand. Or you know, Let’s go rob a Chinese corporation—cool! Artificial Intelligence and genetic engineering are also possible in the game. The film itself was mournful and overly muted. It's an idea that has been explored rather extensively by some very talented science fiction writers, and even trickled far enough into the mainstream to inspire a Will Smith movie.

Science fiction, sometimes called "speculative fiction," has long provided "thought experiments" which imagine alternative worlds where current developments -- social, political, scientific, technological, cultural -- are pushed to their logical extremes. I would rather keep the cyberpunk label as broad as possible, though I respect those people who prefer a more targeted definition. The term cyberpunk was first used in the 1980s — the original cyberpunk novel was "Web of Angels" by John M.

I was miserable, but I probably would have been anywhere. And like true old punks, the values – and fears – of their formative years have carried through. In addition, some people consider works such as Neal Stephensons The Diamond Age to be postcyberpunk. And suddenly a new alliance is becoming evident: an integration of technology and the Eighties counterculture. It is a culture that does not exist right now. unlike the approach taken by FASA in producing the transgenre Shadowrun game.

Cyberpunk author Bruce Sterling summarized the cyberpunk ethos in Cyberpunk in the Nineties as follows: Anything that can be done to a rat can be done to a human being. Solaris by Stanislaw Lem - It was my parents who introduced me to Lem. I would much rather read this than any of the free editions for that reason: I find errors distracting and this version has none.” — Amazon.com user review. In movies such as eXistenZ, The Thirteenth Floor and Inception, the nature of reality and virtual reality become intermixed with no clear distinguishing boundary.
