Laotian is from a large group of related languages, the Thai-Lao or Tai-Kadai languages, which includes Thai, Shan in Burma, Zhuang in Yunnan, Li in Hainan Island, and other languages on the Chinese-Vietnamese border. Have there been any large-scale protests recently? A stone coffin, surrounded by four screen boards and covered by a granite top, was placed on the top platform. As I said, [the Chinese] are mixing in other breeds. [Also], they have a very thick undercoat.

H. the Dalai Lama, spiritual and political leader of Tibet, has set up a government-in-exile in Dharamsala, India. The next morning, waiting for my guide at the hotel, I watched a Chinese woman reading aloud from a Lonely Planet guidebook. Depicts the political subdivision of the Chosen peninsula (Korea) under Japanese rule. The last theme is the most problematic one since there is a growing realisation among the migrant population that the goal of returning to Tibet is too far-fetched in the foreseeable future.

Throughout the country Tibetans rise up against the Chinese. 12th August: the Chinese sign a Surrender Agreement with the Tibetans, and are obliged to return to China via India. Those who had become seriously involved in politics had either been imprisoned or had fled to India. The response so far by the Chinese Communist Party has been to knuckle down even more. Further, to make an organization appear more historical and weighty, the allegedly conspiratorial groups are depicted as a homogeneous block, even if totally unconnected with each other; ¹³⁶ this gives the impression of a united power operating its conspiracies in secret at not only a national, but a global level. ¹³⁷ Its leaders commonly invent long histories of connections to other groups.
