Ask your children to come up with the words first (page 3), then use their responses to fill in the blanks. These ancient people, who lived in caves, did not know how to build houses or to plow the ground. After I built our fireplace, our daughters discovered one more door. The original versions of most of these fantasy stories are filled with plot twists that belong in a modern slasher film. Some of the famous stories Shahrazad spins in many western translations are Aladdin's Lamp, Sindbad the Sailor, and the tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves; however Aladdin and Ali Baba were in fact inserted only in the 18th century by Antoine Galland, who had heard them in oral form from a Maronite story-teller from Aleppo.

The title character in “Frau Trude” turns a disobedient girl into a block of wood and tosses her into a fire. When we talk of folk tales and myths, we are walking on the same continuum with myths growing out of religious traditions. They spent the days feasting and the nights dancing in the light of the moon, and they danced so hard that they wore the shoes off their feet, and for a whole ... I guess you’re right, I shouldn’t put it all on the Grimms. In Rumpelstiltskin the miller's daughter could not spin straw into gold.

Have students in small groups answer the following questions: How are the two cultures' myths different from and similar to one another? It all started a few years ago in a discussion with our English Major Students. London: Andersen Press, 1989. (Ages 6-7). The nursery rhymes they hear are inherently conservative, teach them that there is right and wrong, and demonstrate to them that the world has a certain order. Imagine the history of fairy tales as a map: unfurl this imaginary terrain in your mind’s eye, and you will first see two prominent landmarks, Charles Perrault’s Tales of Olden Times (1697) and a little nearer in the foreground, the Grimm Brothers’ Children’s and Household Tales (1812–57).

Geoffrey Kloske’s Once Upon a Time, The End (Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2005) is a collection of very short, very fractured fairytales read by an exhausted father who just wants his perky toddler to go to sleeps. At least, he did according to some commentators. Beginning with “Once upon a time…” and ending with “…and they lived happily ever after” are common to the genre, but occasionally there are surprise endings. 2) A Goodie is one of the principle characters. In his early days, Andersen wanted to become an opera singer.

You may have seen Lisa’s artwork in decks where she collaborated with author D. I have a dream, a song to sing, To help me cope with anything. I read plot summaries on some of them, but some I was lucky enough to be able to find and watch. The stories remain untouched by literary sensibilities. In addition, female tellers, writers, and collectors have absolutely been ignored, silenced, and subsumed under the totalizing category of the anonymous "folk" by male authorities—and those male authorities such as Perrault sometimes had to turn around and defend fairy tales as worthwhile, despite the perceived feminine (or even, in the case of the French female salon writers, feminist) "taint" of the genre (Warner 1995, 168–70).
