Brought to our area by numerous empirical powers as slaves, it was their labor that built much of the city, including military fortifications, communities and the cotton plantations that formed the foundation of the 18th-century British period and early American expansion. Yet there are still far too few high-quality novels and picture books featuring children of these cultures (especially native American and Latinos) as protagonists in contemporary settings."
